OPPORTUNITY:
In January 2017, Siemens began a £160m investment in the wind turbine production and installation facilities at the Alexandra Dock, Yorkshire. The investment aims to provide a huge boost to the UK’s offshore wind industry and will create up to 1,000 jobs directly.
The construction and refurbishment of the facility includes the office accommodation and welfare areas alongside the development of storage, handling and assembly/testing across a 39,600m² area.
The key areas of groundwork take place within the areas and ancillary facilities, infrastructure, including parking, and landscaping.
SOLUTION:
Working closely with civil engineering and construction company, Volker-Fitzpatrick, MAC Paving Ltd was introduced as the paving solutions contractor within this large-scale and highly complex commercial refurbishment.
Led by a team of 15 paving specialists, MAC Paving Ltd applied a block paving solution which complemented the industrial aesthetic of the wind turbine facility while providing a sustainable, high quality finish allowing heavy-duty use and enabling a minimum 50 years guarantee of no maintenance required.
Exceeding technical requirements, the paving service adds real value to the overall function of the turbine facility. Mac Paving successfully complimented Volker-Fitzpatrick’s intensive project timeline and ensured success for all stakeholders for the refurbishment.
OUTCOME:
As a result of MAC Paving Ltd’s commitment to reliability and quality, Siemen’s Green Port in Hull provides value for over 1,000 members of staff working at the turbine facility. This has allowed Siemens to provide clean power to more than 410,000 UK households while providing an integral platform for Siemens and the Yorkshire region to be a leader in the latest innovations within renewable energy.
